Rift did not want to be here. He did not like the scents, the sights, or most of all, the horrible little humans that came to his stall and rubbed his nose. Irritably he snorted as yet another human foal reached up to pat the numb and sore bit of flesh between his nostrils. The filly gasped and dragged back her hand, her face contorting into a fearful snarl.

"Mummy! The horse is mean!" she wailed, and her mother scooped her up in her arms, emitting noises that were meant to sooth, but only antagonized Rift even more. He uttered a shrill whinny and thrust his head at the pair, stomping and fussing in his stall. Gods, there weren't this many humans at his home! Why couldn't he go home? He threw back his dial and neighed, jumping slightly to lift his forelegs a few inches from the ground. He landed heavily, shaking his head. He was normally a very well mannered horse, but he was young, and this was his first horse auction. He had never liked barns either, his humans had never made him live in one.

"Oi! Rifty, c'mon buddy, it's okay, it's all okay," the young stallion looked eagerly over his stall door at the familiar voice. His favourite stablehand, Jackson, was walking down the aisle towards him. Rift uttered a nicker and reached out affectionately for the young man. Rift didn't find Jackson to be the cleverest human, but he was gentle and friendly, he knew how to handle horses. Jack had tried many times to teach Rift how to live in a stall, a quirk of the man that Rift utterly despised, but the farm owner's daughter, Jessica, had always taken him back to the pasture, telling Jackson that a prized horse should be pampered. Jessica's horse was a nasty, spoiled creature, Jackson always whispered to Rift; and Rift had to say, Lilly was no lily.

Jackson reached the young horse, and stroked his neck slowly, letting his chin rest in his other palm. The horse's warm breath caressed his arm softly. He rested his forehead against Rift's cheek, and sighed deeply.

"Well ol' boy, I've bin fired. Yesiree, yah heard me correct, I bin fired. Turns out 'lil miss Jessica hated me a helluva lot more'n she let on. Got me fired, said it wuz my fault yah ain't stable-trained. Well, it is, but on'y cuz that little snot always stopped my attempts to train yah to this. So, yah ain't the on'y one leavin' Willow Grass Stables." The young man sighed again, and the cremello colt perked his ears forward. Why was Jackson unhappy? Rift didnt understand any of what Jackson had said except "Jessica", and "Willow Grass Stables". Was Jessica taking him back to Willow Grass? Rift balked at the idea, he didn't like Jessica, her voice was too whiny.

"Well, s'long buddyboy, I hope yah enjoy yer new home, when yah get it." With that, Jackson's hands left Rift's neck, and the man began walking away. No, no, come back. Rift shuffled in his stall. He laid back his ears, signalling his anxiety. What the hell was going on?

'Kay, so Rift is almost fully trained, except that he has not been trained to live in a stable, or use a horse trailer, because his humans are morons. And also 'cuz all horses have quirks.

A woman, looking a bit younger than she really was, entered through a small side door, avoiding the crowd at the front. She stopped in the center, glancing around with a fairly expert eye down the rows of stalls. It was a bit emptier then it usually was, but it didn't matter. Either she'd find something she was interested in, or she wouldn't. She just had a lower chance today. Her unnerving, icy blue eyes fell on what appeared to be a younger horse. He was clearly nervous, with how he reared, called out. Not to mention, he was alone. No one there to comfort him. If someone had succeed earlier, they were gone now, and it didn't show.

She leaned against a post, watching as a man went over to the horse. He clearly knew him, with how he settled down fairly quickly. She waited for a moment, to see if the man was just stopping by temporarily or staying with the young equine. When he went away, and the horse began to get nervous again, she slowly made her way over, stopping directly in front of the door, looking up at him, waiting for a reaction, but not doing anything. She wouldn't be scared off easily--She'd been working with abused and troubled horses for a few years, and that didn't come without its challenges, not to mention its close calls.

Rift stared mournfully at the main barn door, where Jackson had vanished into the human herd. He nickered sadly, tossing his head. He wanted out! He kicked the door with his hoof, before backing up, pressing his hindquarters into the back of the small rectangle. His brown eyes flicked through the dark barn, scanning the few other horses within the lines of boxes. None seemed as fidgety as he was, but all were older than him, and it probably wasn’t their first time here. The humans all mingled, talking, laughing, and approaching the horses. Two young females, perhaps the equals of yearlings, passed by his stall, giggling and chattering. He watched them go, still backed against his stall. He didn’t see the woman until she was right in front of him, and then, he didn’t really know what to do. At first, he’d thought it was Jessica, but then her scent registered in his mind, and he realized it wasn’t even someone who’d been near Jessica. She didn’t seem unfriendly, and she was certainly not noisy, which made her okay in his books.

Hesitantly he stepped closer to her, still nervous and miserable, but content for now to have a quiet human paying attention to him. She kind of reminded him of Jackson, but hopefully she was brighter than him, and wouldn’t make Rift live in one of these horrible boxes. He reached out gingerly, sniffing around her face and mane, and then sniffing her clothes. She smelled like a lot of things, but mostly she smelled like horses and hay. He liked this human. A little more confident, he stepped up closer, until he was inches from the stall door, and nickered quietly at her. His cremello coat looked white in the darkness, but the dim lighting gave his coat a goldish gleam.

She smiled softly at him as he grew braver, coming a bit closer. He didn't have trust issues, so much as he didn't like noise and the busy crowds at the sale barn was the thing she concluded rigth away as he took a few steps towards the stall door.

That's a good boy.

She murmured, reaching into her pocket while glancing over at his information sheet, posted up on the door. She's been right, he was young, but it hadn't been hard to tell, really. He probably still had a little bit of growing to do, but nothing drastic, since he was three. Finding what she'd reached for in her pocket, she pulled out a small mint, and then slowly moved her hand towards him, then opened her fingers to reveal the treat, placed flat on her palm.

Rift flicked his ears forward; her voice was nice, very quiet, like someone with horse sense. He loved people with horse sense. He saw her fingers going to her pocket and he snorted eagerly, he knew what that meant. Treats! Jackson had given all the horses treats every two weeks, or sometimes when they did things exceedingly well. He was just a stable hand, but occasionally he trained or helped to train the horses. Rift shifted on his stout pillars, nosing at her jacket curiously. As she lifted her hand to his mouth, he caught the scent of mint, something he didn’t often get. He put his nose into her palm and lipped the small disc into his mouth, crunching it between his teeth joyously. He looked at her with calm brown eyes, and let his ears relax, a sign that he was comfortable.

//I like you.// he thought.

ooc;; sorry for the shortness, saving muse for my other three charries. ^^

She smiled and reached up to scratch him a little on his neck before stepping back a step, now intent on paying for him and taking him home. After all, sometimes she needed a break from bringing back completely ruined horses. He was just young, so he would learn, unlike some, which were hopeless cases.

I'll be right back boy. I've got to go find your owner somewhere, pay for you.

She had a habit of talking to them, even if they didn't understand her. But, of course, who's to say they didn't? They might for all she knew. In any case, it never hurt, even if it sometimes didn't help either. She turned around and sighed, wondering how she'd find the owner in this mess of people. Maybe I'll just wait here... She thought, looking around. She always hated trying to find owners here. It was much better to find an ad and check out the horse at it's stable, but it wasn't too bad here either, just harder to find the person to pay.

ooc; although Jessica isn't actually a character, I'll play her for this post.

A young woman of about seventeen wandered happily through the sales barn. Three of her family's horses, including a promising young stallion sired by one of teir best Lusitanos. Her own horse, a morgan named Lilly, was tethered to her horse trailer not far away. Neither of Jessica's parents had been able to make it, so Jessica was in charge of selling their three horses. They had sent their employee, Jackson, along with her to assist, because although Jessica knew everything under the sun about business, and a fair bit about matching horses to potential owners, she knew jack-squat about horses themselves. Jackson and Jessica despised each other, but had decided to put their differences aside for today, as it was Jackson's last day of employment.

Mai looked back at the picture of the colt with his owner, and looked up, deciding to take a guess and see if the girl who just walked by was Honorific's owner. She walked over to her, calling out so she didn't have to jog.

Hey! Wait up!

Jessica stopped dead as another young woman trotted up to her, calling for her attention. She turned politely, quickly and discreetly looking at the positions of her family's horses. The bay mare was at the barn entrance, the grey clydesdale gelding was across the wide aisle and down five stalls. Rift, the finnicky but clever Lusitano, was three stalls away. Jackpot. She gave the woman a friendly smile, and reached out her hand.

"Hello, I'm Jessica Hartley, were you by any chance looking at that Lusitano colt over there?" She pointed to Rift, who stared at them intently, his long face full god curiosity. "If so, I'm your woman, he belongs to my family's ranch."

In fact I was. He's $1000, right?

She asked, checking, even though she knew the answer. She wasn't about to let the girl make up a price on the spot, but she was checking to see how trustworthy she'd be for any questions she had. She pulled out her checkbook and a pen, as if taunting her.

Jessica smiled, this gal wasn't new to this. The blonde nodded, and watched as the woman pulled out her checkbook.

"So you're really serious about him? That's good, most people don't like such young horses, they likes the ones with experience. Anywho, yes, $1,000 is his price, but, if I may be so bold, what is your name? It's just that, I like to know the names of those I do business with."

The pen scratched the paper for a moment, then the cheque was ripped off and handed over. She put her chequebook away, tucking her pen in with it.

Do you have a leadrope I could borrow? Mine's back with the trailer.

Jessica took the cheque and folded it, tucking it in into her jacket. She looked up at Mai and nodded slowly.

"I think there's one in his stall, the stablehand who came with us likes to be prepared. She walked over to Rift's stall and patted his nose, before entering and going to the feedbox. Reaching under it, she pulled out a blue rope. Good old Jackson.

"Here you go, don't bother bringing it back, we have more than enough."

ooc; yaaay!
